Marketing Communications - Design and Style Basics

June 22nd, 2008 by naradadkhah

By Mary Eule Understand Hierarchy Before beginning the designing process, its a good idea to outline your key message points. Understanding what you want your audience to hear or see first will guide content placement, size, color, etc. Reflect your Prospects and Companys Personality Its important to know your target market in the minutest detail their wants, problems, needs, and interests. Your communication pieces, therefore, should reflect your understanding of your prospects personalities. This can be accomplished in many ways such as choosing the right paper (size, weight, color), fonts (for example formal fonts for wedding invitations; childlike fonts for a day care center sign), size, and language (apt buzzwords). Traditionally, more upscale offers have uncluttered designs with plenty of white space while discount offers are just the opposite you can fill them up with graphics and words. Color While excellent marketers understand that effective use of color is elusive, they follow a few fundamental rules. As you probably expect, there is plenty of scientific research on all aspects of color that is which ones are considered most attractive or eye-catching; what feelings certain colors inspire; or which colors are easiest to see. After sifting through the mounds of information the following tips were echoed repeatedly: These four colors were symbols for the following: Red: action, emphasis, recall, excitement Yellow: happiness, sunshine, attention-getting Green: reassurance, security, stability Blue: order, tranquility, coolness, relaxation Use these findings to guide your choices for instance, dentists should consider painting their walls a lovely shade of blue! Also, test your own color instincts, and those of friends and family, to find out what works best for you A quick printer conducted a recent study in Cleveland, Ohio. He tested different color reply cards (identical wording and offers) for his in-house mailers. Surprisingly, the pink postcards resulted in the highest response rates! Artwork and Graphics Visual images are simple, yet widely effective ways to communicate a lot. Trite phrases such as a picture is worth a thousand words are certainly overused because they continue to ring true. Your artwork will help you: Tell a compelling and appealing story Symbolize your companys values and culture Evoke important feelings Explain your product/service Itemize key points Thus, visually pleasing communication is important and can increase your chances of capturing your prospects attention. Here are some tips for ensuring that it does: 1.Take your time while creating or choosing your artwork. If its rushed it shows. Great photography and graphics are affordable and easy to find on the internet. Check out these three: www.indextock.com; www.corbis.com, and www.fotosearch.com. 2.Make sure your artwork is compatible with your companys and target markets personality 3.Do not create an ad where your artwork overpowers your content, headline, product, etc. Yes, it should be noticeable and tell your story not be the story 4.Your artwork should increase the odds that your message will be notices, even to casual readers or viewers. 5.Dont waste money investing in unnecessary, and often distracting, pizzazz you know, graphics that flash, move around, dance, etc. They increase costs substantially and result in negligible or negative reactions. 6.Find ways to reuse photos, illustrations, testimonials, and blowups again. This will save you money and if they continue to work, why change? Fonts and Typefaces What exactly is a font? Simply put it is the specific traits (size, intensity, and typeface) for letters, numbers and symbols (that is, characters). Typeface is a subset of font and refers only to a characters design (e.g. Times New Roman, Helvetica, Verdana). The right font will make your copy easier to read, create harmony with your artwork and graphics, and be reflect your companys and target markets personalities. Choosing the right font can be daunting particularly given the sheer number of choices. However, let the following general tips guide you: 1.Sans Serif fonts are easier to read because they leave more white space. Tip: Serif: little decorative doolollies (adornments, flourishes) on the ends of the characters Sans: Means without Some popular sans serif typefaces are: Gautami, Microsoft Sans Serif, and Arial. I also like Verdana. 2.For a more traditional look youll want to consider using serif typefaces such as Times New Roman, Century Schoolbook, and Garamond. 3.While its okay to vary font styles within a piece, try not to use more than two. Also, if you decide to try different fonts mix choose one of each sans serif and serif. The contrast will result in an eye pop. 4.When choosing size, italics, and bolds keep readability in mind. This doesnt have to be a major pain in the neck! Look in your own magazines, newspapers, and direct mail copy styles that you find appealing, easy-to-read and in keeping with your companys tone and feel. AVOID: - Reverse Type while it works well for eye-catching headlines, its harder to read and tough on the eyes. Use sparingly - Overdoing italics, underlining and capitalization it looks unprofessional. - Fonts that look typeset (making them fuzzy). They should be clean and crisp. How To Survive As A Working Parent

June 19th, 2008 by naradadkhah

By Amie Porter Basic Tips 1. Communicate with your babysitter, nannies or au pair, mother’s help to keep up-todate. Make as much time as possible to talk to your child care provider. If you can keep the lines of communication open beyond the rush, you’ll have a much better feeling about your child’s development and well being. 2. Don’t get wound up by small issues. If your child only wants to eat burgers every day, let him eat them. He will outgrow this phase. Providing the child is not harming itself (getting over-weight etc.) or someone else by the behaviour just let it go. 3. Be flexible and open to new ideas and options If you have an early morning meeting and it takes your child an hour to decide what to wear in the morning, consider letting them sleep in their clothes. They will think it’s fun and you’ll be at work on time. 4. Be honest and up front with your child about going to work and leaving them with the babysitter, nannies or au pair, mother’s help Explain that you have to work, encourage the child to ask questions of the carer. Be enthusiastic about the carer as your attitude will shape your child’s expectations and experiences. Remember research proves that children benefit from trusting relationships with more than one caregiver. The research has shown that babies with more than one attachment are less distressed when mother leaves for work, they are more playful and content in the presence of other adults, and are less distracted at the birth of a sibling. 5. Don’t panic or feel guilty when your child cries when you leave Young children don’t understand what “I’ll be back later” means. As your child grows older, she will begin to understand that you’ll return for her at the end of the day. With older children, reassure them that you’ll return. Never sneak away. You’re trying to build your child’s trust, not break it down. Remember that childcare can be great for your child, as your child will benefit from personal attention, interactions with other children and age-appropriate educational programs that will be great preparation for school. Research shows that children who receive good quality childcare tend to be ahead of other children both intellectually and developmentally. Research also shows that children in childcare show the same degree of attachment to their mothers and the same amount of security as children with mothers who stay home. Remember if working makes you happy, you’re children will be happier. Working mothers who like their jobs have better personal adjustments, are happier, and are less depressed than full-time mothers, even those who prefer being at home. Depressed mothers naturally have depressing effects on their children. 6. Accept help When your relative or neighbour offers to baby-sit the children or pick them up from school or childcare, let them. They wouldn’t offer if they didn’t mean it. 7. Keep duplicates of “vital stuff” Extra blankets, nappies, clothes, and dummies will come in handy in a panic. 8. Get organized Plan ahead, menus for the week so you can cook extra so there are leftovers, pack the baby’s bag the night before. Generally working parents are organised. For example, working mothers spend the same amount of time in direct interaction with their children as full-time mothers. Employed mothers spend as much time reading to and playing with their children as those at home, although they do not spend as much time simply in the same room. 9. Abandon the idea of the perfect home Perfectly clean house, nutritionally balanced meals, clean well-dressed children, and a fantastic career is an impossible standard that will cause you unnecessary strain. Give yourself a break and concentrate on what’s important. Get in a cleaner, mother’s help to help you with the laundry, house-cleaning, and household work. It will be money well spent. Fast food and ready meals are not poisonous. 10. Occasionally pamper yourself with me time Consider lighting some candles or josh sticks, put in some bath oil and grab your favourite magazine. As most kids hate the bathroom you should be undisturbed. 11. Plan time without the kids. Eat some chocolates, read the newspaper or a book, go to a movie, visit a new restaurant, or go to a museum and relieve some stress. Escape. 12. Go on a course. There are many courses to assist with everything from cookery, through home economics to child psychology How To Choose Quality Child Care 1. Is the carer trained and/or experienced? 2. Have you spoken in person or got reports on at least one (preferably two) parents who’ve used the carer and said good things about her or him? 3. Does the carer respond to your child as an individual and communicate well with you? Are you and your child happy and appreciated? 4. Is she or he willing to help you continue your child’s routine with things such as sleep, food or any special needs? 5. Is she willing to fit in with your ideas on discipline, toilet teaching, sweets and other issues? 6. Does she or he obviously like children and enjoy caring for them? Measuring the Quality of Your Legal Team

June 15th, 2008 by naradadkhah

By Richard Hall When a new car rolls off the assembly line, every part on it has been checked, double-checked and checked again to make sure it meets the exact specifications and tolerances established by the automotive engineers who designed it. Car manufacturers know that in order to sell more cars, and remain profitable and competitive, they have to keep their quality up. Now, measuring quality on your legal team isnt quite as straightforward or engineering-oriented as measuring the specs and tolerances on engines and transmissions. After all, the legal profession is a service, not a product business. And the quality of service businesses is sometimes difficult to measure accurately. The legal profession has always measured its value based on billable hours, rather than bottom-line results, and this also makes the quality of legal services difficult to determine. But even though its more difficult to determine more ambiguous and subjective art rather than science nevertheless, it can be done. So how do you evaluate the quality of your legal team? Its not much different than those automotive engineers who sit down and design plans for how they want their cars to look when they finally roll off the assembly line. You start by outlining the results or outcomes that you hope to achieve from a particular legal engagement, and then clearly communicating those outcomes to your legal team. You want good value for your money, so by defining your expectations and outcomes beforehand, you let your team know what you think is important and valuable in a legal engagement. So define what a successful engagement would look like to you. What results are you hoping to achieve? What are your expectations regarding your legal team? Try to be as specific as possible. Rather than thinking in terms of win or lose, you may want to consider a range of possible outcomes, from best to worst case. Once youve decided on the results youre looking for, break down the engagement by tasks, and try to estimate the number of hours required for each. You may want to assign areas of task accountability to specific members of the legal team. On larger projects, youll want to set milestones, either in percentage of hours billed or engagement tasks completed, where you can measure ongoing engagement progress. Schedule periodic progress reports and reviews and build them into your engagement contract. When reviewing engagement progress, youll need to note any variances from original estimates and expectations and update your progress reports as needed to reflect any changes. Review all monthly billing statements for accuracy, and you may want to enlist the help of an outside firm that specializes in managing legal financial reporting to assist you with all of the paperwork. You should also insist on good customer service including:  Timely notification of any engagement status changes  Discussion of fees and scope of work before engagement is awarded  Return phone calls and emails in a timely manner  Accurate and timely monthly statements  Specifying lawyers that you want handling your case Follow these guidelines and youll not only have a cost-effective, low-maintenance and smooth-running legal engagement, but youll also have a high-powered legal team thats firing on all cylinders for years to come. Bail Bond Software

June 7th, 2008 by naradadkhah

By Damian Sofsian Software has made it a lot easier to deal with bail bonds. These types of software use switchboard-style menus, which make them quick to learn and easier to use. The most popular software being used currently is the BBS or Bail Bond Software. BBS is very user-friendly software that has only two data input forms, clients and Bond, as well as a popup account ledger form that is used for data entry. The software constitutes of drop-down and phone directory style lists that enable quick and easy selection of client and bond records when they need to be modified. All the client records can be retrieved easily as required. All reports and formal letters such as surety letters, delinquent letters, client statements and court and financial reports can be generated at the click of a mouse button. The phone directory style list allows for quick selection of client or bond records to edit. The software provides selectable lists of active, inactive, or all bonds or clients. Alphabetical buttons further narrow the list and ease the selection process. Navigation through BBS data entry and editing can be done using only the keyboard, only the mouse, or with a combination of the two input devices. Another software option is the LexBail software program. One major advantage of this software is that it is provided free of charge to Lexington National agents. This software program was developed specifically for the bail bond industry and is continuously updated. The LexBail software allows agents to run their complete business. This software includes tracking powers and allows you to find bonds written, forfeitures, collateral, total co-signer exposure, premium payment plans, commissions for subagents, remissions, and regulatory reporting. LexBail software is customized for the bail industry to manage and electronically store bail bond records, handle premiums, and more. The only disadvantage of the bail bond software is that it does not run on Macintosh, Linux, Unix, OS2, or any other non-Microsoft Windows Platforms. Bail Bonds provides detailed information about bail bonds, bail bond companies, bail bond license, and more. Bail Bonds is affiliated with Free Criminal Records. Coin Collecting: How To Make The Grade

June 1st, 2008 by naradadkhah

By Mohammed Shomam Coin collection is not synonymous with possessing as many coins as possible. What is important is the quality of the coins rather than the quantity of them. The coins grade is the yardstick to measure its quality. You can measure the grade by using a scale ranged between 0 to 70 which is the highest point grade. This point scale was introduced by Doctor William Shelby in his work Penny Whimsy. The classifications of coins according to grade are as follows: 1. Coins in Mint State: According to Shelbys grade scale, this is equivalent to a value of 60 to 70. In other words, the coins are blemish free. Majority of the coins of this type are new, shiny, uncirculated with absolutely no signs of wear n tear. 2. Coins which are almost uncirculated: The point grade for these types of coins varies between 50, 55 or 58. It is very important for the coin collectors to be aware of the locations of the high points in a specific coin. An almost uncirculated coin is separated from the mint state coins by comparing the difference of the light reflected in other parts of the coin to the high points. 3. Fine coins: Depending on the sharpness of the remaining details on the coins, fine coins can further be classified into FINE (12), VERY FINE (20, 25, 30 AND 35) OR EXTREMELY FINE (40, 45). The designs on the coins are still intact but the coins nevertheless show signs of wear n tear. The mint luster is intact in ETREMELY FINE coins. Very FINE coins resemble coins which have been in circulation for 1 to 3 years, with their minor features worn down by use. 4. Good coins: This category can be further sub-divided into Almost GOOD, GOOD and VERY GOOD (12). THESE coins HAVE BEEN ALMOST completely WORN DOWN BY USE. THE DETAILS IN THE HIGH POINTS HAVE BEEN RENDERED nearly smooth and only weak designs can be observed. The VERY GOOD coins show full rims. The mint mark and the date must be visible in case of GOOD coins. The ALMOST GOOD coins are the most worn out ones. 5. Fair coins: Any coin that can be identified is a FAIR C. Although worn out, they can still be distinguished as belonging to some or the other variety/type of coins. 6. Basal coin: In this particular variety, the metals of which the coins are made can be distinguished, but the kind of coins cannot be determined. Armed with the knowledge of classification and grades of coins, you will find it easy to grade a coin which is a great advantage while collecting them. 10 Most Common Beauty Mistakes of Eco-friendly Women

May 29th, 2008 by naradadkhah

By Suzann Kale Even the smartest among us are still making mistakes. The good news? They’re easy fixes. Let’s watch out for these eco-beauty errors. 1. We’re still buying makeup and skincare products packaged with non-recyclable materials. As handy as plastic jars are, glass is easier to re-cycle. If you must use plastic (glass bottles falling on a tiled bathroom floor are dangerous), become familiar with the recycling number system. Containers which are marked 1 or 2 are easier to recycle than those numbered from 3 to 7. Find the number on the bottom of the jar, next to or inside the triangle recycle logo. Sometimes the information is pressed into the plastic instead of printed, so you might need a bright light and your glasses. If you can’t find the number on the product or the box it comes in, at least look for the circular arrow logo, which indicates a recyclable material. Still can’t find it? Just email the company and ask, by going to the company’s website and looking for a “contact us” button. 2. Let’s bring our eco-awareness to work with us. It’s not just in the home that we can make a difference. Less waste can also help your company’s bottom line. 3. Before buying a new makeup or body lotion, remember to run questionable ingredients through your search engine to check for toxicity. Everything you put on you or your children’s skin, including hair products, can be absorbed into the bloodstream. 4. Remember to bring a re-usable shopping bag to the store with you. Every time. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive. It can be as simple as re-using a plastic or paper bag, or dusting off an unused tote. 5. Make a list and buy all cosmetics, shoes and clothes in one trip, instead of many. 6. Companies are marketing disposable beauty aids - and we’re still buying them. We don’t need disposable makeup remover cloths when a washcloth will do just as well. We can even cut back on cotton swabs and facial tissue, using foam makeup wedges instead. 7. When shopping for new makeup, remember to bring with you a list of green cosmetics companies. You can print out the list at My Makeup Mirror, or any other source that you trust. 8. Old clothes that are too used for donation can be cut up and used as wash and cleaning cloths. Depending on the size of the fabrics, they can also be used for the kids’ crafts projects, re-sewn into table runners, or made into small couch throws. 9. Even if a box is recyclable, excessive packaging is unacceptable. Something small to protect a product from being opened, or a box that’s already made of recycled material, is fine. But boxes within boxes, cardboard shelves within the box to make a small jar appear larger, even tissue paper used to wrap cosmetics at the department store - are all wasteful. 10. In addition to checking the ingredients for toxicity, too many of us are still buying lotions and potions that require the abuse or death of an animal in their creation or testing. Beauty involves compassion. There’s no way we can be truly beautiful if it’s at another creature’s expense. Check My Makeup Mirror to see what makes a truly animal-friendly company. None of these eco ideas are difficult or time consuming. We just need to joyfully make them habits; parts of our daily and corporate lives. We have already made a huge dent in the way the world does business. Let’s use that as momentum to do even more. Suzann writes for the website My Makeup Mirror - a potpourri of articles, product reviews, and how-to’s on hair, cosmetics, and well-being. Portion Control For Your Weight Loss Program

May 26th, 2008 by naradadkhah

By Jim Bolding Weight loss is a matter of input versus output. The input side of the equation is the calories that you eat. Therefore learning portion control is extremely important to any weight loss program. Portion control has nothing to do with what you eat. It’s simply a matter of restricting the amounts you eat. When I was a youngster my family owned a restaurant for a period of time. That’s when I first learned about portion control. Portion control is important in the restaurant business to maintain product consistency and costs. That’s as true today as it was back then. But today it seems that everyone feels that bigger is better. There’s a mega-biggy everything, especially at the fast food places. And when did the all you can eat buffet start? They didn’t exist way back when. You just have to pig out at the buffet so you get your moneys worth. The bombardment of advertisements has given a lot of us a warped sense of exactly what a serving should be. Instead of portion control we have portion “out” of control. Just learning what a serving should be is a great first step if you’re beginning a weight loss program. Eating smaller portions of the same foods you’ve always eaten may be the best “baby step” to take for weight loss. What Counts as a Serving? Bread, Cereal, Rice & Pasta Group 1 slice bread, 1/2 hamburger roll, bagel or English muffin, 6-inch tortilla or 4-inch pancake, 1/2 cup cooked rice, pasta, barley or bulgur, 1/2 cup cooked oatmeal or grits, 1 ounce ready-to-eat cereal, 3-4 small crackers Vegetable Group 1/2 cup chopped raw vegetables, 1 cup leafy raw vegetables, 1/2 cup cooked vegetables, 1/2 cup cooked legumes (beans, peas, lentils), 3/4 cup vegetable juice Fruit Group 1 medium fruit (apple, orange, banana), 1/2 grapefruit, mango, papaya, 3/4 cup juice, 1/2 cup berries or cut-up fruit, 1/2 cup canned, frozen, or cooked fruit, 1/4 cup dried fruit Milk, Yogurt & Cheese Group 1 cup milk, 1 cup yogurt, 1/2 cup evaporated milk, 1/3 cup dry milk, 1 1/2 ounces natural cheese, 1/2 cup ricotta cheese, 2 ounces processed cheese Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs & Nuts Group One serving = 2-3 ounces cooked lean meat, poultry or fish (4 ounces raw = 3 ounces cooked. This is about the size of a deck of cards or an audiotape. 1 ounce meat = 1/2 cup cooked lentils, peas or dry beans; 1 egg; 2 tablespoons peanut butter; 1/3 cup nuts; or 4 ounces tofu All of the above serving sizes are for reference. You might not actually eat only 3 ounces of meat at a meal. But if you eat six ounces you know you’ve had two servings. If you would like to get started with portion control for your weight loss program it would be a good idea to actually measure or weigh foods initially. After a while you’ll be a good enough judge of servings that you can just “eyeball”. Losing weight is not easy. It takes persistence and a good weight loss program that you can stick to. But certainly portion control should be a part of any program. Jim Bolding is a freelance writer and Webmaster who has been publishing weight loss information via the Internet for over 10 years. Your Marketing Plan - Prerequisite to Success

May 17th, 2008 by naradadkhah

By Greg Roworth Marketing is a vital aspect of a business operations. It has been said that, Nothing happens in business until a sale is made. Marketing is about how sales are made and marketing planning is about being proactive in determining how sales are to be made. Developing a marketing plan is the tool businesses use to overcome weaknesses in competitiveness and to increase sales. Without a marketing plan, a business can only be reactive to changes in the market and competition. This situation means that management is always trying to catch up to everyone else. A marketing plan can put the boot on the other foot. The process of developing a marketing plan means that management is now being proactive, developing positive strategies and initiatives to create competitive advantage and boost sales. The Planning Process The planning process involves finding answers to a number of important questions: Do we have enough customers? Who are our current customers and potential customers? What do the customers want? Where are the customers? How do we inform the customers about us, our products and services? How do we enable our customers to buy? How do we put our product or service into the customers possession? Answering these questions requires research and thought about all aspects of marketing. The process enables the development of competitive advantages and differentiation between the way a business does business and how its competitors do business. The Result The result of putting together a marketing plan is a business that is more in control of its sales strategies and results. Advertising and promotions are planned and structured to achieve specific results. Effective sales methods are developed and sales staff are trained and made accountable for both activities and results. If implemented properly, the marketing plan forges partnerships between the sales team and other personnel in other functions, creating an efficient, cohesive organisation. Selecting the Right Diet Pills for Weight Loss

May 14th, 2008 by naradadkhah

By David Chandler More and more people are turning to the diet pill for their weight loss program. After all, why go through all the strenuous activities of exercising when you can just take a pill. With the introduction of diet pills to promote weight loss, more and more people are turning to this form of weight loss. Most advertisements claim that their product can easily melt away fats and cellulites. Who needs to tone those abs and biceps with a disciplined exercise program when a diet pill can do it for you? It is estimated that 60% of the American population are considered obese. The weight loss and diet pill industry are reaping millions of dollars in the United States alone. Now, the questions are: is there any truth regarding the manufacturers’ claims that these diet pills can ultimately promote weight loss. Are they effective in helping people lose weight? Moreover, if that is the case, do these pills help those people maintain their ideal weight and curb any fat accumulation in the body? In reality, there are diet pills that can really make a person lose those extra pounds. There are diet pills that contain certain substances that have been scientifically proven effective. These diet pills are effective in increasing the metabolism of the body, thereby, initiating weight loss. In addition, these diet pills contain certain substances that suppress one’s appetite. However, with so many diet pills saturating the market today, trying to find the best and most effective diet pill can be very tedious. With that in mind, here are some things to consider when selecting a diet pill that is effective and safe. Ability to boost metabolism In choosing diet pills that will effectively promote weight loss, it is best to look for pills that have the ingredients that will enhance your body’s metabolism, or the ability of the body to burn excess fats. Choose those diet pills that contain alpha lipoic acid, green tea extracts, and L-Canitine because these ingredients had been clinically proven effective in promoting weight loss through increased metabolic rate. Appetite suppressant Find diet pills that effectively suppress your appetite. This does not necessarily mean that you will skip meals but you will not feel as hungry and therefore less likely to eat between meals. Obesity usually happens to people who are fond of in-between meals, which actually initiates excessive calorie intake. Calorie stopper Because obesity is usually due to excess intake of calories in the body, which is more than the recommended amount, it is best to choose diet pills that have the special ingredients that will curb the entry of calories into the body. These substances are known as phaseolus vulgaris. This is known to create an enzyme that will efficiently control any excess calories in the body. The enzyme responsible for this wonderful job is known as alpha-amylase. Metabolic enhancers It is best to choose diet pills that have the so-called lipotropic elements that are effective in eliminating fats from the body. It functions like a sweeper that effectively sweeps excess fats outside the body. These lipotropic elements are found in vitamin C, chitosan, alpha lipoic acid, and green tea extracts. Water retention Effective diet pills are those that contain diuretics. These elements avert the retention of water in the body during the weight loss regimen.
